Barcelona Holidays

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most popular city break destinations. Located on the south of the Costa Brava, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city that combines world famous sights, shopping and a great nightlife. The hotels in the city are excellent and there’s a great selection from small bed and breakfasts to top notch 4 and 5 star hotels in Barcelona. Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia, a city of art and culture and home to the greatest works of Gaudi. Holidays in Barcelona are varied offering a vibrant atmosphere, some of the greatest shopping in Europe and access to the beach resorts on the Costa Brava.

Currency in Barcelona

Spain's official currency is the Euro (EUR). One Euro is divided into 100 cents. Banks give the best rates but money can be exchanged at bureaux de change and major hotels. Traveller’s cheques and major credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. ATMs are widespread and are generally the cheapest and most convenient method of obtaining money.

Holidays in Barcelona

Barcelona city breaks offer a wealth of places to visit and things to do. The most famous street, Las Ramblas in Barcelona’s ‘old city’, the Barri Gotic, the Placa Catalunya and the city’s port are lined with excellent cafes, restaurants and shops. The Passeig de Gracia is a shoppers paradise, home to some of the best boutique shops in Europe. Two palaces dating from the 15th century have been converted into the Picasso Museum and it is now one of the city’s top attractions. City breaks in Barcelona also offer the chance to sample the world renowned architecture and extraordinary work of Gaudi, including his masterpiece the unfinished cathedral, La Sagrada Familia, with its elaborate designs and intricate detail. The pink fairytale house at the entrance of Guell Park was once home to Gaudi and his niece but is now a museum that showcases Gaudi-designed furniture, décor, drawings and portraits of the architect. One of the most popular areas to visit whilst on holiday in Barcelona is the Barri Gňtic, also known as the Gothic Quarter, a maze of narrow streets with stunning Gothic buildings and cathedrals. There are numerous museums and art galleries in the city ,something to suit everyone and for football fans take a guided tour of Barcelona Football Club. If you want to escape the bustling city centre, the sandy beach is nearby and ideal for soaking up the sun.

Language

Spanish is the official language. English is understood in tourist areas. Catalan, Galician and Basque are spoken in the relevant areas.

Nightlife in Barcelona

Barcelona holidays are rich in nightlife. The liveliest areas are the Barri Gotic old quarter, La Rambla, the neighbourhood of L'Eixample north of the city centre, and Port Olimpic down at the waterfront. The Barri Gotic offers a huge selection of tapas bars, wine bars and clubs open until early morning. Port Olimpic is also a late night spot and has some fantastic seafood restaurants
