Vilamoura is an all-in-one seaside town in Portugal’s Algarve region. Life revolves around the huge marina that’s filled with million-pound yachts and lined with elegant bars and authentic Portuguese restaurants. You’ve got some history here, too, courtesy of the town’s Roman ruins. And it’s all neatly packaged between protected wetlands to the north and a long strip of sand to the south.
Vilamoura actually boasts 2 sandy beaches – Praia da Marina and Praia de Falesia. Sunloungers and umbrellas are dotted along both, and a long promenade between them brings in plenty of bars and restaurants. Where the sprawling Praia de Falesia ends, Praia Olhos d’Agua begins. It’s a 20-minute drive away, and the watersports centre offers snorkelling trips into the scalloped caves.
It may have a modern vibe to it, but just 100 metres from Vilamoura’s marina there’s the ruins of an ancient Roman fishing village, complete with old wall murals and a bathing complex. Back in the present, you’ve got 4 championship golf courses to the north of the town, plus over 50 outdoor tennis courts in the club next to the marina.
A half-an-hour drive takes you to the pretty town of Loule, popular for walks along the imposing walls of the 13th-century castle. And about the same time gets you to Faro. In the cidade velha – the old part of the city – there’s a cathedral that may not look much from outside but has colourful tiles inside. And from the top tower, you get a fantastic view of the 17th-century Bishop’s Palace, official residence to the Bishop of Faro.

What are the beaches like in Vilamoura?
There are two beaches in Vilamoura, Praia da Rocha Baixinha which is to the west of the marina and Praia da Falesia which is really just an extension of Praia da Rocha Baixinha. There are plenty of bars to be found on the boardwalk and plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. Falesia beach has been awarded a Blue Flag and both beaches are accessible via walkways and ramps.
What is the nightlife like in Vilamoura?
There is a such a wide range of restaurants in Vilamoura and whether you are young or old, there is something to suit. There is a good range of European food as well as Portuguese cuisine and many of the restaurants will offer a good mix of everything. There are quieter, romantic restaurants and some larger, noisier restaurants too. A lot of the restaurants offer nightly entertainment too so you may get more than you bargained for.
The bars here are also very lively and some of them not only sell great food but also provide some great live entertainment. There are many lively bars situated in Vilamoura but some of the best are said to be situated down at the marina. There is everything from Karaoke to Jazz Club so you may as well visit them all to see what’s best.
If you don’t want to go back to the hotel after the bars close, visit one of the many nightclubs in Vilamoura. There are many nightclubs that open until the early hours of the morning and are used by both visitors and locals. If you don’t want your night to end when the bars close but you don’t want to dance the night away, then why not pay a visit to the casino. Although there is a disco in the casino, there are over 500 slot machines and a gaming room with at least 20 gaming tables eg poker and roulette.
